Chapter 1: The Meeting of Cultures
Chapter 1: The Meeting of Cultures
Beginnings of America:

Nearly 12,000-14,000 years ago / 9000 BC migrations reached the southern tip of South
America / 15th century AD = contact with Europeans -> brought with them diseases
(smallpox) ended in: demographic catastrophe, weakened societies, aided Spanish/
Portuguese exploration
America before Columbus:

Adaptation to surroundings = nomadic bands, hunting, fishing, agriculture -> created civilizations •
Population: a lot more people (Indians)

Civilizations in the South -> Peru = Incas with a powerful empire, political system, large paved roads / Central America & Mexico = Mayas and a culture w written language, numbers, calendar, agriculture -> Aztecs = established rule, harsh religion, “savages” /
Economies = agriculture, high social standings, elaborate capital cities

Civilizations in the North -> North of Mexico = not as great as Southern, hunting, fishing, gathering, Eskimos fished and hunted seals, large, frozen lands / Pacific Northwest -> salmon fishing, settlements along coast, engaged in competition / Far West -> wealthier, densely populated / Southwest -> irrigation / Great Plains = sedentary farming /
Woodland Indians -> Mississippi (Cahokia = St. Louis) / Northeast = mobile, farming by clearing the land fast / Algonquin tribes -> Iroquois Confederation
Why do historians so often differ?

Positivists: shared views that real knowledge can only be derived from direct, scientific observation of clear facts

“Facts” are unknown bc they mean almost nothing without an effort for proof / Leads to many disputes for what may seem like an easy question

Some day there is no such thing as a “truth,” product of interpretation
Tribal Cultures:

Agricultural Revolution = population growth, stronger religion/customs (many gods/ totems) •
Divided tasks by gender -> women controlled the social/economic organization
Europe Looks Westward:

Before: not many people knew

Diamond refutes this answer by pointing to the idea that the peoples of northern Europe benefitted from the advances—such as agriculture, wheels, writing, and metallurgy— “developed in warmer parts of Eurasia” (Diamond 22). As evidence, Diamond points to the facts that writing in Native American societies arose in Mexico, New World pottery derives from tropical South America, and that Classic Maya society of the tropical Yucatan and Guatemala was “generally considered the most advanced in art, astronomy, and other respects” (Diamond 22).…

The Aztecs practiced what we now called democracy. The Aztecs had a supreme speaker (not an emperor) and divided their land into corporate clans, where each clan elected their administration officers and speakers. They also had a gran administration that elected the supreme speaker. Down in the south the Incas had what seems today a state of the art agricultural system. They had fertilizers and developed a different type of plant for the different type of soil. They had a massive diversity within potatoes reaching up to three thousands five hundred types of potatoes. They had different types of plants for the different types of systems. Throughout the whole Americas the indigenous people had an understanding in medicine. The Aztec had a sophisticated medical system ranging from surgeons to healers. The people from the Andes even preform brain surgery. If paying attention to their society they all focus to main things, their religion (for many if not all relate to nature) and the well-being of their own people. For the most part the sun was the key of their religion or their god .They specifically value nature for everything that was giving to them. They used gold and other metals to decorate and didn’t worship or gave it much focus. Due to their focus on nature and not greed they were able to invent and discover the many benefits that our…

As far as the implementation of new technology goes, Mexico was very stubborn to say the least. As written in the book, "In near disbelief, a New York Times reporter wrote that Mexicans scarcely understood the use of the wheel." (p.72), so it is not entirely difficult to believe that Mexico was still in an ancient lifestyle.…

The Americas are places where beautiful empires from ancient populations settled, spreading their culture, architecture, knowledge, and art, among other qualities. Two important empires that were raised during 600-1550 CE in the Americas are the Aztec Empire in Mesoamerica, and the Inca Empire in the Andes. “The Inca Empire and its contemporary Aztec Empire grew out of political, economic, and cultural pattern that began to form around 600 CE” (Von Sivers et al. 433). The Inca and Aztec Empires are an important and valuable piece of history that represent the innovations and rapid growth from the past cultures. There are several comparisons and contrasts with the Inca and the Aztec Empires that include: societies, architecture, culture, and…
