The Effectiveness of Using Puppets with Children
SECTION 6- CASE STUDY PROPOSAL

Approximate finish period of the assignment:

Introduction
I want to evaluate the effectiveness of puppets in the acquisition of new vocabulary in year 1 pupils in a South London school.

My research questions are:
Will a child’s comprehension and retention of a word be increased through using a puppet?
After use of the puppet, can children use the words in context?
Will my teaching be more effective with the use of puppets?

Context
I expect to conduct my research with year 1 students from a South London school. There will be approximately 30 students in the group. The sessions will take place over half a term which equates to 6 sessions in total.

The school has specialist support for children with hearing impairment, presently there are no hearing impaired children in this class.

Methodology
The six sessions will be split into three sessions with the puppet and three sessions without the puppet so I can compare the two approaches.

Data will be collected at the end each session in the form of a multiple choice questionnaire. Children will be shown a card upon which the “word of the day” is written. They will be shown three other cards labelled 1, 2 and 3 which have a picture and/or definition on them. A tally will then be taken of how many children choose which answer.

I will analyse my data by looking at the percentage of correct answers in the questionnaire. I have favoured this method because questionnaires can be used easily with larger samples (Haralambos and Holborn, 1995, p. 837) and the results from questionnaires can be compared more easily than observations (Harris, 2003, p. 10).

I considered using pupil observation alongside the questionnaire; however I decided against this because I feel the questionnaire would present more tangible evidence.

A working bibliography for my research is as follows:
