Louisiana Purchase- Napoleon had plans to build up French control in North America, but when much of his army died of disease and a war with Europe was expected, he realized he didn’t have the necessary resources. Livingston and Monroe were sent to negotiate the purchase of just New Orleans because America had lost the rights to deposit cargo there and merchants were angry. Instead, Napoleon offered the entire Louisiana territory. They agreed to the purchase the land for 15 million. The people living there were incorporated at US citizens, and France received special privileges to the port.
Lewis & Clark Expedition- Lewis & Clark Expedition- organized by Jefferson to explore the lands west of the American border even before they had purchased the Louisiana territory, led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark in 1803. The two had both fought against Indians and knew the wilderness well, and with their guide Sacagawea and forty-eight men, they set off to collect facts on geography and find trading opportunities with the Native tribes. The fall of 1805 they reached the pacific coast, and in 1806 they returned to St. Louis, Missouri, where they had begun their journey. The expedition provided important information about the western territory and would eventually lead to more strife with the Natives Americans.
