DIFFUSION= The movement of atoms or molecules from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration. Atoms and small molecules can move across a cell membrane by diffusion. OSMOSIS= Diffusion of fluid through a semipermeable membrane from a solution with a low solute concentration to a solution with a higher solute concentration until there is an equal concentration of fluid on both sides of the membrane. SELECTIVE PERMEABLE MEMBRANE=a membrane (as a cell membrane) that allows some molecules to pass through but not others cell membrane, cyto-membrane, plasma membrane - a thin membrane (a double layer of lipids) enclosing the cytoplasm of a cell; proteins in the membrane control passage of ions (like sodium or potassium or calcium) in and out of the cell; "all cells have a cell membrane tissue layer, membrane - a pliable sheet of tissue that covers or lines or connects the organs or cells of animals or plants BROWNIAN MOTION= The random movement of microscopic particles suspended in a liquid or gas, caused by collisions with molecules of the surrounding medium. INDIA INK is added to water and the solution to magnify using the oil immersion lens. TOTAL MAG 1000 DEMONSTRATION 1 HYPERTONIC= Having the higher osmotic pressure of two solutions. ISOTONIC=having the same or equal osmotic pressure

HYPOTONIC=having a lower osmotic pressure than a comparison solution RED BLOOD CELLS=A cell in the blood of vertebrates that transports oxygen and carbon dioxide to and from the tissues. In mammals, the red blood cell is disk-shaped and biconcave, contains hemoglobin, and lacks a nucleus. PLANT CELLS=a cell that is a structural and functional unit of a plant. the basic structural and functional unit of all organisms; they may exist as independent units of life (as in monads) or may form colonies or tissues as in higher plants and animals SCIENTIFIC METHOD= method of investigation in which a problem is first identified and observations, experiments, or other relevant data are then used to construct or test hypotheses that purport to solve it HYPOTHESIS TESTING=The theory, methods, and practice of testing a hypothesis concerning the parameters of a population distribution (the null hypothesis) against another (the alternative hypothesis) which will be accepted only if its probability exceeds a predetermined significance level, INDEPENDENT VARIABLE=A manipulated variable in an experiment or study whose presence or degree determines the change in the dependent variable. DEPENDENT VARIABLE=The observed variable in an experiment or study whose changes are determined by the presence or degree of one or more independent variables. POSITIVE CONTROL += THE POSITIVE CHANGES IN THE EXPERIMENT

NEGATIVE CONTROL -= IS WHERE NO CHANGES WHERE MADE IN THE EXPERIMENT CALCULATING CHANGE AS A %= take the % in mass and divide it with the intial mass CONCENTRATION= the number of molecules in a unit volume.

PLASMA MEMBRANE= boundary of a cell
PASSIVE TRANSPORT= no energy required to move through a cell membrane. ACTIVE TRANSPORT= requires energy for materials to pass thru the cell membrane DEMONSTRATION2 The temperature on Diffusion
Independent Variable is the TEMPERATURE
Dependent Variable is RATE OF DIFFUSION
Hypothesis= DIFFUSE FASTER IN INCUBATOR
MATERIALS USED=
1.1 G OF METHYLENE BLUE
Fridge, Room Temerature, Incubator TIME = 15 minutes to an hour DEMONSTRATION3 EFFECT ON MOLECULAR MASS ON DIFFUSION
INDEPENDENT VARIABLE= substance used
Dependent Variable= Rate of Diffussion
Hypothesis= Potassium Pomegrante is lighter to move the Methylene Blue Methylene Blue increased 14mm =2mm
K Permeagrate= 42mm= increased by 7mm
