• Definition:
– Bearing is a machine element which support another moving machine element called as Journal.
– A bearing is a mechanical element that permits relative motion between two parts, such as shaft and housing.



Function:
– Ensures free rotation of shaft or axel with minimum friction.
– Supports shaft or axel and holds it in correct position.
– Takes up the forces that acts on the shaft or axel and transmit them to the foundation.
