Executive Summary

Not included in word count and always on a separate page.

This section is very short. In a few sentences, summarise your main findings as a result of your investigation into the HR issue you chose.

This is probably one of the last things you would write.

1. A problematic work situation that I can relate to a HRM concept in Book 2 (Part a - 150 words – 15 marks)

1.1 A description of the HRM-related work problem that I have encounteredand why I think it relates well to my chosen study session

Have you done what it says in the guidance?

• Described a specific example that relates to you or a friend/relative • Does it give enough detail for you to analyse it using one of the study sessions from Book 2? • Have you briefly explained why you think your example is perfect for applying to your chosen study session?

1.2 Analysis of my experience using my chosen concept(s) (Part b – approx 445 words – 40 marks)

Have you done what it says in the guidance?

• Have you clearly stated which concept you have chosen and what study session it came from? • Have you provided a brief description or definition of your concept clearly referencing any quotes or sources? • Have you used your chosen concept to analyse and explain the facts of your HRM problem clearly explaining why it is a problem? This is what we call applying the concept/theory/model to a problem to better understand why it is a problem.

For example, if I were writing this assignment I might discuss an experience I had working in a team that had poor motivation. Using Session 1.2, What motivates people? I would explore what financial and non-financial incentives were in place and assess how effective (or not) they were ensuring I used relevant theories of motivation such as Maslow’s hierarchy of needs (1954) and Vroom’s expectancy theory (1964).

Another example, if I were writing this assignment I might discuss an experience I had in a job which I found really dissatisfying. Using session 2.2, The job characteristics model, I would describe a situation where I was dissatisfied and using Hackman & Oldham’s model (1980) analyse and explain what it was about the job that I found dissatisfying. I might have said the job was repetitive and unvaried and did not utilize my current level of skills and experience etc. If I were to use this study session I would probably reproduce the model on Pg 22 of Book 2 and use it to identify my issues so I could explain them better.

1.3 Proposed solutions to the problem (Part c)

Have you done what it says in the guidance?

• Have you clearly stated whether or not you feel...
