CULTURE/ETHNOCENTRICITY – be able to identify, define and interpret Culture – the way of life for an entire society; food, beliefs, dress, language, music, festivals, art, holidays, religion, behaviors, values, rituals, manners Ethnic – race, origin, religion, culture, common ancestry and genealogy; kin/tribe, people of one country not all same ethnicity but are same nationality Diversity – different cultures, broad range of differences Prejudice – pre + judge, refers to existing biases toward members of certain groups based on stereotypes, ex: sexism, racism, ageism, anti-Semitism, linguicism Stereotype – ass/u/me, ideas held by individuals about members of certain groups, some in your favor but usually negative, treat people with bias and then become prejudice Ethnocentric – the viewpoint that one’s ethnic group is the center of everything, against which all other groups are judged, + = pride, - = genocide Assimilation – the process whereby a minority group gradually adopts the prevailing culture’s customs and attitudes Taboo – strong social prohibition, forbidden, objectionable, abhorrent Bias – preconceived ideas

Xenophobia – fear of foreigners
Norm – rule that is socially enforced
Isolationism – alienated from society for breaking norms, foreign policy  isolate ourselves

GOVERNMENT
Democracy – rule by the people
Direct Democracy – everyone can vote (not exist at national level) Representative Democracy – people are elected to stand in for others to express their views and opinions on ideas, they vote and make decisions, at every level, they represent us Partisanship = siding with your party

Presidential Democracy – head of government and head of state = president, elected separately and independently of the legislative branch, president is limited by legislature and judicial  all equal and have checks and balances, legislative Congress = Senate > House Senate – only 100, upper house, serve for 6 years, has a bit more power than House House of Representatives – base on population, 435, serve only 2 years, campaign a ton Parliamentary Democracy – all power lies in the legislation/parliament; elected assembly (parliament) members make decisions, pass laws, and supervise spending Chief Executive – prime minister, leader of the largest party, nominated by majority party Head of State – monarch – figure head still there because of people Head of Government – Prime Minister

Cabinets: Democracy – president appoints experts, same party, smart people, trusted people Cabinets: Parliamentary – parliament appoints, this is their version of checks and balances “Quid pro quo” – I’ll help you if you help me

Monarchy – one person rule, power transferred by heredity, 3 stages Absolute – have all power, “absolute power corrupts absolutely” Limited Monarchy – placed limits on ruler
Constitutionalist – most today
Divine Right – claimed to be chosen by God
Authoritative – no accountability
Dictatorship – leader obtains power by force, leader’s word is law, generally not hereditary (N. Korea is exception), “Live by the sword, die by the sword” coup (d’etat) = overthrow Martyr = inspiring cause

Totalitarianism – fascism and communism, ruler controls all of the citizens beliefs and attitudes, everyone expected to believe same, control media/censure, God-like images, larger than life, make people buy into everything, no religion (or underground ones), cut off trade, isolate people, take power by force/fear Unitary – single, central agency, ex: 13 colonies, 50 states Confederacy – loosely organized alliance of states/nations, weak, ex: European Union – Euros Federal – power divided national and state, ex: U.S. Government today ECONOMICS

Economics – The study of how people allocate their limited resources to satisfy their unlimited wants Cynical def – common sense mad difficult
