Basic Argument Speech

Introduction:

Opener: open with a narration of my older sister and of spousal abuse and statistics of spousal abuse in the US or Kansas.

Audience need to know statement: Spousal violence laws are open ended and may not always protect those who are in serious need of assistance.

Speaker Background: Junior studying criminology, three classes in family violence and spousal abuse.

Thesis: the US government should regulate domestic abuse laws throughout the United States for three reasons.

Reason 1: Some states do not have the same laws on domestic abuse. Sub A: Compare Kansas laws to another state that has a strict take on the offense Sub B: Produce information on how legislature does not take it seriously, and how it has been moved to a misdemeanor offense in the past.

Reason 2: Police have different standards/ procedures for answering a domestics violence call. Sub A: State some different procedures that local police stations use Sub B: Support with reasons as to why police handle these calls differently

Reason 3: Offenders may not have the same sentences
Sub A: Cite different cases that have been dealt with locally Sub B: Argue as to why the penalty should be harsher in these cases using deterrence as a set of data to shown the trend of decline in recidivism.

Conclusion: Conclude with a national trend of the increase of spousal abuse and emphasize that this is a real problem and needs to be stopped.

Restate thesis: With the stated facts presented I press that the goverment can make a change and stand up be the first ones to fight domestic violence.

Review main points ABC: In doing so we will be able to (A. Have the same laws in every state. (B. The police force will all be using the same protical when it comes to answering domestic disputes. (C. Every offender will recieve the same treatment.
