The concept was to create unity among the people for their nation. The thought process was that everyone could be united with the commonality of speaking the same language and sharing the same history and culture. Nationalism encouraged people to take pride in their national heritage, a sort of global harmony is how it would be described. Europe was a disastrous place after World War II. Many countries were in agony because of their economy and military. Many feared Germany would rearm and try to take over again, while other feared the big “C”…Communism and the Soviet Union would attack. In order to rebuild the continent, leaders decided on one solution: the unification of Europe. What they couldn’t decide on was which path to take: federalism or functionalism. Federalism, on one hand, is the Big Bang Theory of Europe, the idea to rebuild the continent all at once. This comes from the notion of popular sovereignty. Functionalism focuses on individual problems such as security and economics. If organizations can be formed to solve these problems, then a unified Europe will follow. The mentality of Europe is should the government or the people be built first?…

It can arguably be said that all the expanding empires of European powers have aimed at unifying Europe under one rule. Even before the creation of European Union, there have been attempts to unify Europe. All living things want to survive. In order to survive they need power, in order to protect that power they need more power. Hence this desire was the reason the Greeks formed colonies all over the Mediterranean, the Romans conquered all of Europe and established their empire, the franks conquered Europe, the Holy Roman Empire was formed, napoleon conquered so much of Europe; Hitler engaged the rest of Europe in a world war. While all these wars had the motive of power behind them but they were all, nonetheless, aimed at unifying Europe.…
