Roman- saw greek model as way to increase importance in med., rome went to large territorial state instead of city-state, greek style temples, pottery, paintings, and alphabet, wanted to appear "civilized to rest of world" Carthaginian- facilitated communication & exchange. adapted succefully, merchants traded with other Phoenician colonies, ruling families took sardinia and sicily, expanded commerce into atlantic, went to athens for philosophers, architecture reveals marriage of styles
