Reading that quote for the first time, I could relate completely to it. In high school, all I was interested in 
was to be creative and make my hands into tools to create beautiful works of art. I took every art class and spent hours after school drawing or painting. It seemed as if I couldn’t stop my creativity. It just kept flowing out of me and I would be inspired at any moment.
Fast forward to my life now. I’m a Sophmore in college studying fine arts but I’ve seemed to be in a creative slump. I’m so busy taking general studies that it seems like all my energy is in what year WWII ended or how to solve algorithms. Being in school can be strenuous and time-consuming. I come home after the library exhausted that the last thing I want to do is pick up a pencil and draw. What happened to that girl that couldn’t stop her creativity?
As I have had to contemplate this dilemma I’ve figured out some was to find my creativity even though I’m distracted from other classes. These tips worked for me, but it might not work for every art student.
Watch a Movie or Video
I know most students don’t have time to sit down and watch a whole movie. I’ve been watching Vimeo videos from other artists. These videos are short 5 minute works of art. They always seem to spark my creativity and I instantly come up with several ideas of artwork that I can create.
Spend Time Outside
Keep close to Nature’s heart… and break clear away, once in awhile, and climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean. –John Muir
John Muir got it right. There is something cleansing about being outside and enjoying the beauty around me. I find inspiration in the gardens around my campus. Every campus has its own beauty to it. Even if you live in a busy city. Take the time to find that beauty.
Find an Art Museum
Every campus has an art museum and you can find the most stunning pieces in other student’s work. I try to check out new galleries often and spend up to an hour studying the art.
Take Small Creative Breaks
This is something that I’ve really benefited from. I’ll set aside 15 minute breaks where I draw, paint, or sculpt something really quick. It releases that creativity that I know is inside of me.
